Wetting agent is a kind of substance that can reduce the interfacial tension between liquid and solid, increase the contact between liquid and solid surface, or increase the wetting and expansion of solid surface.

The role of wetting agent is mainly to improve the wetting dispersion of the agent in water, improve the permeability of the liquid and the viscosity of the treated object. The wetting effect depends on the effective reduction of the surface tension of the liquid under dynamic conditions. The wetting agents used in pesticide processing must be less hydrophilic than hydrophobic in chemical structure, and are mostly non-ionic rather than ionic hydrophilic groups. Lipophilic hydrophilic balance value (HLB) is generally 7 ~ 18.

The role of the hydrophilic group as long as it can make the wetting agent slightly soluble in the water phase under the conditions of use, or as long as it can fully interact with water to prevent the wetting agent from not dissolving. Because the wetting agent is too hydrophilic, it will interact with water and reduce the movement of wetting agent molecules towards the interface. Short chain ionic surfactants are mostly salts formed by hydrophobic anions and hydrophilic cations, easily soluble in water, often used in saline solutions, high electrolyte content can compress the double point layer around the hydrophilic group, so that it can move to the interface. The hydrophobic group can also be increased to reduce the solubility of the wetting agent in water and improve the wetting force. Most of the wetting agents are non-ionic and anionic compounds, and a few are cationic compounds. The non-ionic wetting agents are all compounds with high molecular weight. However, a wetting agent with a small molecular weight is better wettability than a wetting agent with a large molecular weight, because smaller molecules can disperse rapidly in solution. In addition, hydrophilic wetting agents with branched chains are better than those without branched chains.
